A few months ago, Rachel was approached by Elizabeth Marsh (affectionately known as “Lizzy”) of Primal Junction. Lizzy was working with a publisher to write her very first recipe book on the trendy Paleo diet and wanted Rachel to showcase the food beautifully.

Timelines were tight; there were 55 recipes to photograph in 5 weeks. Rachel worked day in and out while balancing other work to get the photos done. Not only did she hit the deadline, she has helped create a book full of incredible food photography. I was lucky enough to get to try a lot of the recipes and the ones I had were so tasty!

My role
My job wasn’t just to eat the food. Someone had to take the portrait photos for the author/photographer bios. Rachel asked me to photograph her and here’s the image she chose:
The location was simple. We took a little walk around out neighborhood in Melbourne and found a nice spot in a local park.
The shoot itself was a bit different. Since Rachel is a photographer, she had a pretty specific idea of what shot she had in mind. It’s not often that I’ve been on shoot where the creative direction is coming from the subject! Luckily I was able to capture what she wanted and the image graces the back page of the book.

Are we competitive?
Some people wonder what it is like to be in a relationship with another photographer. In our case, it’s great! Not only can we support and critique each other, but since we’re not in the same niche, we don’t tend to get competitive in what we’re each trying to create. We are more competitive with ourselves and are both committed to furthering our photographic art and craft.
I was really happy with how these photos turned out. She looks beautiful if I do say so myself!
